Birds of a Feather, Together

Borosilicate glass feathers on sterling silver

One of the many treasures you can find along the trail, my kiddos and I love finding feathers. We want to examine them, watch them float through the air, wear them, and bring them home. They are so delicate and yet strong enough to lift the largest birds. They are brilliantly intricate, yet so ragged and wild. Glass, as a medium, also contains contradictions; it is molten yet solid, delicate yet durable, transparent and opaque. Creating these glass feathers requires a rough type of repetition, with each finished piece showcasing its own intricate detail and unique characteristics. These feathers are a reminder that we too can successfully hold contradictions within ourselves and within our community. This last year has brought a lot of these tensions to the surface, and yet here we are still caring for each other and stronger together.

Natural features of the Kootenay region inspired the palette, including the waters of Kootenay Lake, the autumnal Western Larch, the ancient Kokanee Cedars, and the craggy Selkirk Mountains. This small collection is designed as jewelry and/or decor, you can hang them from your window or your body (necklace/earrings).
